Communities across the Black Hills celebrated Independence Day weekend with parades, fireworks, concerts and community gatherings, highlighted by the return of fireworks to Mount Rushmore for the first time in six years.
The Mount Rushmore celebration, held July 3 as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary observance, featured fireworks, military performances and remarks from President Donald Trump drawing visitors from across the region and nationwide.
Elsewhere in the Black Hills, residents and visitors packed community events in Rapid City, Spearfish, Belle Fourche, Sturgis, Hill City, Lead, Custer and Keystone. Parades, family activities, live music and traditional fireworks displays brought thousands together throughout the holiday weekend.
Local law enforcement agencies reported a busy weekend as they managed increased traffic, large crowds and holiday-related calls for service. Despite several incidents requiring police response, officials praised the cooperation of residents and visitors who took part in the celebrations.
