The recount in the closely contested Sioux Falls mayoral race will continue Thursday, with certified winner Christine Erickson holding a narrow lead over Jamie Smith after the first day of counting.
As of Wednesday evening, unofficial recount results showed Erickson with 18,283 votes to Smith’s 18,279, a four-vote margin. Erickson was originally certified the winner of the June 23 runoff election by just two votes.
Recount officials reviewed absentee ballots and voted not to count 153 ballots received after polls closed, while also addressing a small number of ballots with signature or ballot-type issues. The three-member recount board said the process could extend into Thursday and possibly Friday.
If the recount changes the outcome, the city clerk would issue a new certificate of election naming the winner.
