The Rapid City Council on Monday held a first reading of a proposal to rezone land north of Mall Drive and east of Haines Avenue from general commercial to light industrial.
The request, submitted by Avid4 Engineering on behalf of Elevate Rapid City, is intended to support development of a mixed-use business district featuring commercial, retail, office, and light manufacturing uses. Supporters say the project would help attract higher-paying jobs and create opportunities for graduates of the South Dakota School of Mines and Western Dakota Tech to remain in Rapid City.
Elevate Rapid City emphasized the zoning change is aimed at light industrial uses, not heavy industry.
The proposal will return to the council for further discussion and a possible final vote at a future meeting.
