Gov. Larry Rhoden marked the completion of South Dakota’s new Women’s Correctional Facility in Rapid City by cutting a symbolic ribbon of razor wire. The 102,750-square-foot prison includes three 96-bed housing units, substance-abuse treatment programs, education opportunities, and a 12-bed Mother-Infant program. State officials said the facility is designed to reduce recidivism and improve rehabilitation outcomes. The Department of Corrections plans to begin transferring inmates from Pierre to the new facility next month after staff training is completed.
