Secretary of Corrections Kellie Wasko announced a major milestone with the number of in-state parole absconders dropping from 486 to just 97 as of October 1.
The Department of Corrections (DOC) launched the Absconder Apprehension Unit (AAU) in 2023 to locate and apprehend individuals who evade parole supervision. The Unit, composed of experienced parole agents, works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement.
A key partnership with the U.S. Marshals Service–Dakota Territory Fugitive Task Force has led to over 250 arrests of parole absconders since its inception. Arrests have occurred across South Dakota and nationwide, including Puerto Rico.
Additionally, DOC hired an intelligence analyst to work within the South Dakota Fusion Center, enhancing data sharing and coordination with law enforcement agencies at all levels.
