The South Dakota Lottery Commission has approved a new policy requiring all lottery employees to undergo criminal background checks, including fingerprinting, every five years.
Director of operations Trevor Wiebe noted that employees had not previously been subject to such checks, despite a 1987 state law mandating them. The Division of Criminal Investigation will process fingerprints through a national database, with cards destroyed after one year.
The policy also streamlines requirements for license holders: new applicants will continue to be fingerprinted, but existing licensees will only face re-checks every five years without resubmitting prints.
Commission member Jamie Huizenga said the change reduces costs while maintaining public trust in lottery operations, which generate more than $170 million annually for the state’s general fund.
