A rock excavation blast is scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, December 17, 2025, on U.S. Highway 14A approximately four miles east of Deadwood. This blast is part of a backslope repair project designed to reduce the steep slope north of Highway 14A near Camp 5 Road, a proactive effort intended to lower the risk of landslides in the area.
During the operation, flaggers will stop traffic at a safe distance from the work zone. Vehicles will remain in place until the blaster gives the all-clear and any debris has been removed from the roadway. Traffic is expected to reopen by the end of the day, though travelers are encouraged to consider alternate routes while the blast is underway.
At present, December 17 is the only scheduled blast for this project, though additional blasts may be planned in the future if needed. The work is being carried out by Century Blasting Service LLC of Piedmont, South Dakota, with DRM, Inc. of Rapid City serving as the prime contractor on the $1.5 million project. Completion of the overall project is anticipated in June 2026.
