A fire that broke out along Skyline Drive this afternoon has been contained at 2 acres, according to the Rapid City Fire Department.
Crews were dispatched just after 1:30 p.m. following reports of multiple fires in the area. Officials said three separate blazes merged into two, with early reports linking the incidents to downed power lines and a possible electrical transformer explosion. The exact cause remains under investigation.
By late afternoon, firefighters had stopped forward progress of the flames and were placing handlines around the perimeter. Authorities confirmed that no structures are threatened and no evacuations are required at this time.
Resources on scene include the Rapid City Fire Department, RCFD Module Crew, State Wildland Fire teams, Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department, and Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department.
Officials urged the public to avoid the Skyline Drive area due to ongoing operations and downed power lines, stressing the need to keep access clear for emergency crews.
The fire department said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, the Greyhound Fire continues to burn near Highway 40 between Playhouse Road and Rushmore Ranch Road. Public safety officials have issued a SET notice for residents north of Highway 40 between Playhouse Road and the Hayward Fire Station. Those in the zone are advised to prepare to evacuate, gather pets, medications, and important documents, and stay alert for official warnings.
Highway 40 is closed between Courtyard Place and Playhouse Road due to fire activity and heavy smoke. Crews are working to contain the blaze, but strong winds and dry fuels remain a challenge.
Fire remains active, and residents in the affected area should remain vigilant.
