With holiday travel approaching, the terminal expansion at Rapid City Regional Airport continues. Project One, launched in October 2023, includes a new TSA checkpoint, expanded ticket counters, and upgraded baggage screening. The checkpoint is set to open in March, with ticket counter work finishing in 2027 at a cost of $70 million.
Project Two, expected to begin in about two years pending funding, would add five gates, more seating, expanded concessions, and accessible restrooms. Estimated at $100–125 million, it aims to meet growing demand as passenger boardings have more than doubled since the late 1980s.
Airport officials say current construction has not significantly disrupted travel, though impacts are expected once gate work begins. Staff anticipate smoother passenger flow and shorter wait times once the projects are complete.
