Wind Gusts reported as high as 100 miles per hour are causing multiple issues from wildfires, to downed trees, property damage and power outages across the Black Hills and Rapid City.
Black Hills Energy reports over 25 thousand customers have been affected by outages. Crews are working, as more outages are being discovered this morning.
Around 1:30pm Wednesday, Fire crews responded to multiple fires on Skyline Drive related to downed power lines. The blazes were contained within 2 hours after burning 2 acres.
Another fire was reported around 2:45pm on Wednesday 2 miles east of Keystone. The Greyhound Fire burned 200 acres and caused the closure of Highway 40 and officials alerted residents to prepare for evacuation. As of 10pm Wednesday, the highway has been reopened and the evacuation alert was lifted.
Air quality alerts are also in effect. Dust and smoke are making conditions hazardous, especially for children, seniors, and those with breathing problems.
Officials urge residents: stay indoors, and avoid outdoor activity.
The National Weather Service says a high wind warning will remain in effect for the region until 1pm this afternoon.
