The Rapid City Public Library’s first floor may soon see significant upgrades. On Tuesday, the city’s Public Works Committee recommended that the full council approve the library’s long‑planned reimagination project.
The $695,071 proposal would relocate and expand the first‑floor restrooms and Maker Space, add a janitor’s closet, and make the restrooms fully ADA‑compliant. The existing meeting room would also be enlarged.
Library Director Terry Davis said the project has been years in the making, noting ongoing issues with restroom capacity and accessibility.
“We did have an unfortunate incident of someone with a mobility cart getting stuck in one of the ADA stalls, so it’s been on our radar,” Davis said.
Under the plan, the new restrooms would be built in the current Maker Space area, which would move and expand. The existing restrooms would be converted into study rooms, and a new recording studio would be added.
If approved by the full council on Monday, Davis said she hopes construction could be finished by mid‑ to late summer.
