Two men are in custody after an armed robbery at a business on Mount Rushmore Road Sunday morning, according to Rapid City police.
Officers were dispatched around 11:40 a.m. on January 4 to a business at 2640 Mount Rushmore Road after receiving a report that a man had entered the store, displayed a handgun, and demanded cash. Police say the employee complied, and the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
A suspect description helped officers quickly detain a man in the area. Surveillance video showed the robbery suspect meeting up with another man shortly after the incident. They were seen entering an apartment building at 636 Cathedral Drive before leaving again just prior to being contacted by police.
Based on the video review, officers identified the robbery suspect as 22‑year‑old Matthew Arapahoe. Police say the second man, 39‑year‑old Ronald Redtomahawk, helped Arapahoe attempt to evade officers and dispose of the weapon used in the robbery. Investigators also determined Redtomahawk received a portion of the stolen money.
Both men were arrested on charges of First Degree Robbery and transported to the Pennington County Jail. Police later recovered the weapon used in the incident and determined it was a BB gun made to resemble a real firearm. The investigation remains ongoing.
