The Piedmont Board of Trustees will meet tonight to discuss the annexation of several parcels of land as residents try to block or restrict a proposed 300‑acre limestone mine by Simon Contractors. Nine landowners — representing about 85% of the area’s assessed value — have petitioned for annexation, hoping city zoning authority will give Piedmont more regulatory power than Meade County currently has.
The debate comes as lawmakers prepare for the 2026 session, where bills on Black Hills preservation and industrial project notifications are expected.
Simon Contractors, licensed by the state to operate from 2026 to 2043, says the mine is needed for local construction materials. Opponents remain concerned about dust, traffic, and long‑term impacts.
The board will review the petition this evening at 6:30 p.m. at Piedmont City Hall.
