Rapid City Councilor Stephen Tamang has been selected as the council’s new vice president, earning the leadership role just six months after taking office. The decision came during Monday night’s council meeting, where members voted without any competing nominations.
Tamang joined the council in July 2025, sworn in alongside fellow newcomer Callie Meyer. During that same meeting last summer, the council elected Rod Pettigrew as president and Bill Evans as vice president.
Evans has since stepped away from the vice president position. In response, Pettigrew nominated Tamang to fill the vacancy, with Meyer offering the second. The nomination went uncontested.
Outside of his work on the council, Tamang is a physician with Monument Health. His first term on the council runs through 2028.
