Two people were killed late Saturday night in a single‑vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Highway 385, about 10 miles north of Hill City.
The crash was reported at 10:12 p.m. on January 10, 2026, near mile marker 92.
According to preliminary information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2003 Toyota 4Runner was traveling southbound when it left the roadway to the right. The vehicle then tripped and rolled multiple times, coming to rest in the east ditch.
Both occupants—a 22‑year‑old woman from Sturgis and a 22‑year‑old man from Deadwood—were ejected from the vehicle and died from their injuries. Authorities say neither occupant was wearing a seat belt. It remains unclear which of the two was driving at the time of the crash.
The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family members.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
