A Rapid City man was arrested late Friday night after authorities say he attempted to steal a vehicle, prompting a homeowner to fire shots while trying to stop him.
The Meade County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched around 11:15 p.m. to the 7700 block of North Haines Avenue for a stolen‑vehicle call. As they were responding, additional reports of gunfire in the area led several South Dakota Highway Patrol troopers to assist.
Investigators later learned the gunfire came from the homeowner, who fired multiple rounds while trying to prevent the theft of his 2025 Ford pickup. The suspect fled but was located during a search of the surrounding area.
Deputies identified the suspect as Edward Clay, 40, of Rapid City. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, grand theft, and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Authorities also said Clay had stolen another vehicle earlier that evening from a Common Cents gas station in Rapid City. During his attempt to get away, he allegedly drove through a barn on private property before abandoning that vehicle and heading toward North Haines Avenue.
Clay sustained a minor injury, received treatment at a local hospital, and was later booked into the Meade County Jail.
Officials believe there may be additional victims who experienced property damage connected to Clay’s actions. Anyone in the area who discovers related damage is asked to contact the Meade County Sheriff’s Office.
