PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota’s snowplows have a fresh batch of creative names for the 2025–26 winter season, thanks to the sixth annual South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) snowplow naming contest.
This year’s winning entries range from pun‑filled to pop‑culture inspired, with contributions coming from classrooms, local businesses, and residents across the state. Among the standout names is “Rhinestone Plowboy,” submitted by staff at Lantis Enterprises in Spearfish—a playful nod to Glen Campbell’s classic hit.
Four of the winning names came from elementary classrooms in Aberdeen, Hill City, Armour, and McIntosh. Preschoolers in Jones County also joined in, successfully naming their Winner‑area plow “Scoopy Scoopy Doo.”
For Lantis Enterprises, the contest has become an annual tradition. Employee Merida Smith said “Snowplow Days” has become a fun way to boost winter preparedness and office morale. Staff members submit name ideas throughout the week before voting on a favorite to enter.
SDDOT staff selected the winners after public submissions closed in mid‑December. All previously named plows from earlier contests remain in active service across the state.
Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt thanked winter maintenance crews for their work keeping roads safe. He also encouraged travelers to continue using SD511 for up‑to‑date road and weather information.
