Two people were killed and several others were injured in a chain‑reaction crash Friday afternoon on Interstate 90, about five miles west of Reliance.
The crash occurred at 3:44 p.m. on Jan. 16 near mile marker 244, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Authorities say a 2025 Kenworth semi traveling westbound had slowed for a possible crash ahead when a 2008 Mercury Sable struck the rear of the truck. The impact triggered a series of collisions involving a 2025 Ford F‑150, a 2013 Ford F‑150, and a 2010 GMC Yukon.
The two front‑seat passengers in the Mercury Sable, a 28-year-old-male from Colome, and a 27 year-old man from Martin were pronounced dead at the scene.. Two additional passengers in the Sable suffered serious but non‑life‑threatening injuries.
The driver of the 2025 Ford F‑150 and two of his passengers were also hospitalized with serious, non‑life‑threatening injuries. A fourth passenger in that vehicle was not hurt.
The driver and a passenger in the 2013 Ford F‑150 sustained serious, non‑life‑threatening injuries. The driver of the GMC Yukon received minor injuries, and the semi‑truck driver was not injured.
Investigators say whiteout conditions contributed to the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate. Officials emphasized that all information released so far is preliminary.
