A bill moving through the South Dakota Senate would allow voters to challenge another person’s citizenship at the polls. Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Deadrick says the measure is intended to protect election integrity.
Opponents argue the bill is unnecessary because laws already prohibit noncitizens from voting. They also worry it could lead to harassment or inappropriate questioning of legitimate voters.
Sen. Liz Larson, a Democrat from Sioux Falls, said,
A legislative committee has advanced the bill to the full Senate for consideration.
