South Dakota recorded 110 fatal crashes and 123 deaths in 2025 — the lowest in five years — according to preliminary data from the Department of Public Safety’s Office of Accident Records. Fatalities dropped 16.9% from 2024, with 25 fewer deaths, and fatal crashes declined 18.5%.
Seat belt use remains a major concern: 59% of applicable fatalities involved unbelted occupants.
Speed-related deaths fell to 21, down 22% from 2024 and well below the five‑year average of 36. Motorcycle fatalities also dropped significantly to 23 — a 30% decrease — supported by statewide training that reached more than 1,950 riders.
Alcohol‑related fatalities rose slightly, with 35 deaths in 2025 compared to 33 the previous year; the five‑year average is 45.
The Highway Patrol and Office of Highway Safety continue statewide outreach, media campaigns, community education, and teen driver programs. A new campaign, “It Starts With You,” urges drivers to stay committed to safe behaviors.
