Black Hills National Forest plans to conduct prescribed burns this Saturday, Feb. 7, with operations possibly continuing into Sunday, Feb. 8, depending on weather and final approval. The burns aim to reduce overgrown vegetation and lower wildfire risk.
Work will take place in the Anti-Horse project area, about 18 miles west of Custer and 5 miles west of Jewel Cave National Monument. No closures are expected, but the public should avoid the area and watch for warning signs.
Smoke may be visible. Drivers should slow down and use headlights in smoky conditions. Air quality updates are available at fire.airnow.gov. Burns may be postponed if conditions change. Updates will be posted on the forest website and social media, and local emergency managers will be notified when operations begin.
