Two B‑1B Lancer bombers from Ellsworth Air Force Base took center stage Sunday during a historic joint‑service flyover at Super Bowl LX.
The Ellsworth–based aircraft joined a coordinated formation of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy jets in a tribute marking the nation’s 250th birthday. The flyover occurred during the national anthem at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, ahead of the matchup between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
The formation featured two B‑1B Lancers from Ellsworth, two F‑15C Eagles from the Fresno Air National Guard Base, and four Navy aircraft—two F/A‑18E Super Hornets and two F‑35C Lightning IIs from Naval Air Station Lemoore.
Military officials described the mission as a symbol of joint‑force unity and a salute to 250 years of American independence.
For Ellsworth’s aircrews, the event served as both a high‑visibility training mission and a moment of pride for the Rapid City community. The precision flyover required exact timing to pass over the stadium as the national anthem concluded.
