The South Dakota House has rejected legislation that would have protected healthcare providers from being required to participate in medical services that violate their conscience. House Bill 1153 failed on a 25-41 vote on Tuesday.
Sponsor Representative Les Heinemann said healthcare workers shouldn’t have to compromise their beliefs.
But Representative Nick Fosness of Britton, who leads a rural healthcare center, said the bill would create staffing problems.
The bill failed final passage, effectively killing it for this session.
