Governor Larry Rhoden signed SB 2 on Tuesday, a bill removing firearm suppressors from South Dakota’s definition of “controlled weapons.” The change eliminates state‑level regulations on suppressors, which remain regulated federally.
South Dakota becomes the first state to take this step. The bill was signed at Silencer Central alongside its prime sponsors, Senator Casey Crabtree and Representative Drew Peterson, Attorney General Marty Jackley, and industry stakeholders.
Supporters of SB 2 described suppressors as safety tools that reduce noise and protect hearing. They said the bill removes redundant oversight while maintaining federal safeguards.
With SB 2, Governor Rhoden has now signed 10 bills and issued one veto this legislative session.
