Trial opened Wednesday for Dillon Wilson, Erin Provancial, and Montell Olivera, the final three defendants charged in the Aug. 20, 2022 shooting deaths of Joseph Standing Bear and Petan Milk in north Rapid City.
Olivera is accused of killing both men; Wilson and Provancial are charged with aiding and abetting. Prosecutors say the attack was retaliation for the earlier killing of Cory Old Horse, a gang leader, and claim the group planned the attack, gathered weapons, and entered the apartment with a 15‑year‑old girl before the shootings.
Defense attorneys argue the three didn’t know a murder would occur and say co‑defendants who took plea deals changed their stories. One suspect originally charged, Robert Yellow Bird, was later cleared.
Jurors reviewed police body camera footage and heard testimony from investigators and a witness who saw several people flee immediately after the shooting.
