The Rapid City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved $44 million in Vision Fund money to expand the Rapid City Regional Airport terminal. The project will add five gates to ease crowding during peak travel times.
The $44 million local commitment is required for the airport to secure federal funding. Councilman Rod Pettigrew said the city’s participation is key to keeping the $100 million project on track.
The first phase — including baggage upgrades and TSA expansion — is already halfway done. Airport officials hope to break ground on the new gates within one to two years.
