South Dakota House Education lawmakers voted Monday to shelve Senate Bill 198, a proposal to restrict student cell phone use during the school day.
Bill sponsor Republican Rep. Taylor Rehfedt from Sioux Falls supports a statewide standard.
The bill would generally ban student cell phone use during the school day, with exceptions for approved medical or educational accommodations and emergencies.
Education secretary Joe Graves says the educators should have the local control.
The committee voted 8-7 to send it to the 41st legislative day.
A recall effort to replace the cell phone bill with charter school language also failed 7-8.
