A proposal allowing counties to begin processing absentee ballots a day early advanced Monday, as the House State Affairs Committee endorsed three election‑related bills.
The committee voted 11–0 to approve Senate Bill 171, The bill, would let counties log and secure absentee ballots the day before Election Day so they’re ready for tabulation.
Lawmakers also advanced two other election measures:
- SB 151 — Requires publication of the names of delegates elected to the Republican and Democratic state conventions, allowing candidates for constitutional offices to know who will vote on their nominations. It passed 12–0.
- SB 175 — Requires proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. It advanced 11–1.
All three bills include emergency clauses, meaning they would take effect immediately upon the governor’s signature in time for the June primary. The bills now head to the house.
