A 27‑year‑old Rapid City man received a suspended prison sentence Monday after a judge said the victim’s request for mercy influenced his decision.
Circuit Judge Joshua Hendrickson sentenced Terrell Grinnell to a 15‑year suspended sentence and six years of probation after Grinnell pleaded guilty in January to fourth‑degree rape in the June 2025 assault of a relative. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
Grinnell initially faced a more serious third‑degree rape charge, which carries up to 25 years in prison.
Hendrickson said the victim’s letter urging rehabilitation was “powerful,” adding he would not hesitate to send Grinnell to prison if he violates probation. Grinnell must register as a sex offender.
Deputy State’s Attorney Braedon Houdek had pushed for a lengthy prison term, arguing Grinnell’s story shifted over time and that he showed little accountability until the day of sentencing. He cited statements Grinnell made during a presentence interview, saying they reflected a lack of remorse.
Grinnell apologized in court and in a letter to the judge, telling the victim he was sorry for causing emotional and mental harm.
Grinnell is scheduled to remain under supervision for six years.
