Sharp exchanges and a few new policy proposals marked Monday night’s second televised debate among the four Republicans seeking South Dakota’s governor’s office.
House Speaker Jon Hansen said he would split the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, while U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson proposed moving Medicaid to the Department of Health and appointing a state surgeon general.
Much of the debate centered on taxes. Johnson criticized Hansen and Gov. Larry Rhoden for backing sales‑tax increases tied to property tax relief and attacked Toby Doeden’s plan to eliminate property taxes, saying it lacks realistic funding. Hansen also challenged Doeden, who said spending cuts and new revenue sources could make his plan work.
Rhoden defended his record as governor and pointed to Johnson’s role in past budget cuts that preceded later tax increases. Candidates highlighted their experience and priorities in closing statements.
The June 2 Republican primary winner will face Democrat Dan Ahlers in November. Republicans have held the governor’s office since 1979.
