The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding more than $1.1 billion in federal funding to American Indian tribes nationwide for affordable housing projects, with South Dakota tribes set to receive nearly $49 million.
HUD announced $1.13 billion in Indian Housing Block Grant funding for more than 300 tribes across the country. The program is the primary source of federal housing assistance for Native American communities and is funded through federal treaties and the Native American Housing Assistance and Self‑Determination Act of 1996.
Eight South Dakota tribes will share $48,997,833 in funding. The grants support activities such as housing construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, and housing services.
The Yankton Sioux Tribe will receive more than $3 million. Patricia Flying Hawk, executive director of the Yankton Sioux Housing Authority, said the funding is primarily used to maintain and operate rental properties on the reservation.
The 2026 funding total slightly exceeds last year’s allocation, when HUD distributed just over $1.11 billion nationwide.
