One person was killed and another remains in critical condition following a crash involving a stolen vehicle Tuesday morning, according to the Sturgis Police Department.
Officers responded around 10:39 a.m. April 14 to a report of a stolen vehicle. When police located the vehicle and attempted to make contact, the driver fled, speeding westbound on Lazelle Street at an estimated speed exceeding 70 mph.
Police said the stolen vehicle, a newer Ford F‑250, was driven recklessly and passed other traffic before colliding with a white Honda Accord that was also traveling west.
Both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be extricated by emergency crews. The driver of the stolen truck was airlifted with life‑threatening injuries. The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, while the Sturgis Police Department is handling the related criminal investigation. Charges are pending.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Meade County Sheriff’s Office and Sturgis Fire and Ambulance.
