A South Dakota State Penitentiary inmate has been sentenced to an additional 40 years in prison following convictions on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of first-degree robbery.
Jeremiah Hart, 36, was sentenced Thursday in Minnehaha County Circuit Court. A Minnehaha County jury convicted him in March on the three felony charges.
Prosecutors said the charges stemmed from an April 23, 2024, incident inside the South Dakota State Penitentiary, during which Hart stabbed another inmate with a dangerous weapon and robbed him. The victim later recovered from his injuries.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Department of Corrections’ Office of Inspector General. The prosecution was handled by the Attorney General’s Office.
Hart is already serving a 20-year sentence out of Davison County after pleading guilty in 2013 to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
