The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office have partnered with doorbell manufacturer Ring to help investigators gather video evidence through the company’s Neighbors app.
Through the partnership, both agencies now have an official presence on the app, allowing law enforcement to send neighborhood-specific requests for video or information related to active investigations. For example, detectives investigating a string of vehicle burglaries could ask Ring users in a targeted area to review and voluntarily share relevant footage.
Police emphasize that participation is optional and that officers cannot access video without a user’s consent.
Officials note the feature is specific to Ring devices and the Neighbors app, and residents are still encouraged to report suspicious activity directly to law enforcement by calling 911 in emergencies or 605-394-4131 for non-emergency incidents requiring police attention.
