Residents of apartment buildings and homes along Country Road West and Kateland Drive, north of Rapid City, were evacuated yesterday after a construction crew struck a gas line.
Multiple agencies, including the Rapid City Fire Department and Montana-Dakota Utilities, responded to the incident. Fire officials said the leak posed a greater risk than usual, with gas concentrations high enough to create an explosive hazard.
Officials said the size of the damaged line complicated the response, requiring crews to excavate and shut down three smaller lines at the same time to fully stop the leak.
The evacuation order was lifted at approximately 5 p.m.
