Piedmont is transitioning to a larger form of local government this year following its reclassification as a second‑class municipality.
With a census population of 977, the city is moving from a board of trustees to a mayor‑commission form of government. The new structure includes a mayor serving a five‑year term and four city commissioners serving staggered terms of one to four years.
All seats were technically open in the June 2 election, but only the mayor’s race and one four‑year commission seat are contested. Aaron Clendenin and Jon Parks are running for mayor, while Philip Aitken and Benjamin Neill are vying for the four‑year commissioner position. Dell McMillin, Bruce Lutz and Shannon Blotske will fill the remaining commission seats for three‑, two‑ and one‑year terms, respectively.
Candidates for city and county offices will be available to meet voters at a Meet Your Candidates event at 6 p.m. April 30 at the American Legion in Piedmont.
