Three people have been sentenced in federal court for separate gun-related crimes linked to incidents in Rapid City, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Oscar Ortiz‑Romero, 34, a Mexican national, was sentenced to time served after being convicted of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Authorities said Ortiz‑Romero was stopped for speeding and DUI in March 2025, during which officers found a loaded pistol and ammunition. Officials said he is in the country unlawfully and is expected to be deported.
Avalon Gayton, 23, of Rapid City, was sentenced to four years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. Police discovered a pistol during a September 2025 traffic stop. She will also serve three years of supervised release.
Ashton Shaw, 20, also of Rapid City, received a five-year prison sentence for receiving a firearm while under indictment. Police found a stolen pistol with an extended magazine in a vehicle after reports of shots fired in June 2025.
U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons said the cases highlight ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in the community. All three defendants were taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
