South Dakota Republican candidates gathered last night for their final gubernatorial primary debate ahead of the June election in Sioux Falls.
Toby Doeden, Dusty Johnson, Larry Rhoden and House Speaker Jon Hansen answered questions on taxes, public safety, education, immigration and free speech during the debate hosted by Sioux Falls Live and The Dakota Scout.
Tax policy drew early discussion with Rhoden defending past sales tax measures as tools for local control, while Doeden reiterated his proposal to eliminate property taxes. Hansen emphasized his role as a “fighter” for voters, and Johnson outlined a cautious approach to attracting data centers to the state.
On recidivism, Doeden criticized parole policies, calling for stronger rehabilitation programs. Rhoden acknowledged challenges and said improvements are underway, while Hansen highlighted the importance of inmate education and reentry support.
In closing statements, Rhoden pointed to his roots in agriculture and his military service, while Johnson emphasized his focus on leading the state for future generations. Hansen closed by stressing his commitment to families, and Doeden highlighted his business background as a contrast to the other candidates.
The GOP primary election is set for June 2nd.
