South Dakota Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson announced Tuesday that Brian Bengs has officially qualified for the ballot as an independent candidate for U.S. Senate in the Nov. 3 general election.
Independent candidates are required to submit at least 3,502 valid signatures to appear on the ballot. After conducting a random sample review, the Secretary of State’s Office determined that 93.85% of Bengs’ signatures were valid, resulting in 4,311 accepted signatures — well above the minimum requirement.
Under state law, candidate petitions may be challenged within five business days of signature validation. Any challenge must be filed with a signed affidavit detailing specific objections. For Bengs, the deadline to file a challenge is 5 p.m. Central Time on Friday, May 1.
