South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said a DCI review determined two Sioux Falls Police detectives were justified in using force during a March 31 officer-involved shooting. Investigators found the suspect, Richard Olson Jr., pointed a pistol at detectives while resisting arrest on a federal warrant; officers fired but did not hit him, and he was later apprehended by a police K-9 with minor injuries.
Charges are pending, and Olson is presumed innocent. The incident was the second officer-involved shooting in South Dakota this year.
