Rapid City leaders are advancing a plan to relocate the city’s railyard and reconfigure rail traffic, with a draft study headed to the City Council on Monday.
City planners say the current rail setup is no longer sustainable, citing blocked streets, limited road expansion and the aging Campbell Street bridge, which may have only five to 10 years of use left. The study recommends moving rail operations to Box Elder and reconfiguring a key junction to prevent trains from backing into downtown traffic.
Both the Legal and Finance Committee and Public Works Committee have recommended approval of the study, which outlines next steps involving the city, the railroad and state transportation officials.
