The Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire in rural Box Elder on May 3 after smoke and flames were spotted coming from a detached structure.
Fire crews were dispatched to the 4900 block of South Sunnyside Drive, where first-arriving firefighters found an active fire burning inside a single-story detached garage. Heavy smoke was visible, and flames had extended into the ceiling, roof assembly, and nearby grass.
Firefighters quickly launched an aggressive attack, successfully containing the fire to the garage and preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings, infrastructure, or other property improvements. About a quarter-acre of grass was burned during the incident.
No injuries were reported to firefighters, civilians, or domestic animals.
Following the incident, the fire department issued a reminder to residents about the importance of maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Officials recommend keeping detectors clean and free of dust, changing batteries when clocks are changed, and replacing the entire unit after 10 years or if a detector is suspected to be faulty.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
