Rapid City set a new record for building activity in April, posting its highest April valuation ever and the fourth-highest monthly total in city history, according to a report from the City’s Building Services Division.
The city issued 212 building permits in April with a combined valuation of more than $92.7 million, shattering the previous April record of $55 million set in 2021. The surge was largely driven by a $64.8 million permit issued to Black Hills Power Inc. for construction of an engine hall and fire pump house at the Black Hills Energy Lange II Power Plant on Deadwood Avenue North.
That permit ranks as the third-largest by value ever issued in Rapid City. Only November 2019, May 2022, and January 2018 recorded higher monthly totals.
From January through April, the city has issued 792 permits totaling more than $160.5 million — the second-highest valuation for the first four months of any year, trailing only 2018. City officials say the numbers reflect continued strength in local construction and development.
