Families in Rapid City can take part in a free water safety event as the YMCA of the Black Hills hosts a Safety Around Water program on May 9.
The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rapid City YMCA Family Pool and is open to children ages 3 and older. Children under the age of 5 must have a parent in the water with them during open swim.
Held in recognition of Water Safety Month, the hands-on program focuses on building basic swim skills and teaching water survival techniques designed to help reduce the risk of drowning.
YMCA officials will also share key safety reminders with families, including the importance of active supervision, avoiding breath-holding games, swimming only in designated areas, and using the “reach, throw, don’t go” method to help someone in trouble in the water.
The event is free to attend, and registration is encouraged.
