The city of Sturgis has significantly increased its cash reserves over the past three years, with total funds across all accounts now nearing $9.2 million, according to city officials.
Finance Officer Ann Bertolotto told the city council that cash balances have steadily grown, rising from about $223,000 in April 2023 to $7.6 million in checking and savings accounts by April 2026. When including all city-held funds, the total cash position is just under $9.2 million.
The improving financial picture comes after several years of budget challenges. A 2024 audit revealed that city accounts had not been reconciled in 2023 and 2024, prompting efforts to stabilize finances. Bertolotto said her office is still working through audits and plans to review the city’s debt ahead of upcoming budget discussions.
To address financial uncertainty, the city reduced spending in recent budgets, including cutting positions and scaling back capital projects. Officials said those deferred projects, along with continued sales tax revenue directed to the capital improvements fund, have contributed to the growing cash reserves.
