The Lead City Commission unanimously approved changes to its employee residency policy while declining to adopt proposed updates to its vacation policy.
The new residency rule requires most city employees to live within 13 miles of City Hall, expanding eligibility to include nearby communities such as Spearfish, Sturgis and Whitewood. Department heads, however, must continue to live within Lead city limits. Officials said the change is intended to improve recruitment by allowing access to more housing options.
Under the previous policy, employees were required to live within the Lead-Deadwood School District, which excluded those nearby communities despite its large geographic reach.
Commissioners also reviewed a proposed overhaul to the city’s vacation policy aimed at enhancing benefits for long-term employees, but the measure failed to advance after it was removed from consideration due to a lack of a motion.
Commissioner Rob Carr recused himself from the discussion and votes on the policies because his wife is a city employee.
