Homeschool enrollment in South Dakota has surpassed private school enrollment, as interest in at-home education continues to grow, according to state organizers.
James DeJong, president of Homeschool South Dakota, said the rise began during the COVID-19 pandemic but has continued as families become more comfortable managing education at home.
To better serve families in western South Dakota, the organization moved its annual conference from Sioux Falls to Rapid City. The event, held for more than a decade, aimed to connect and support both experienced homeschooling families and those considering the option.
The conference featured educational workshops, curriculum resources and activities for children, including science demonstrations and chess instruction.
