Dozens gathered Monday to oppose a proposed uranium drilling project in the southern Black Hills as a state permit hearing began.
Opponents raised concerns about potential groundwater contamination and impacts to Craven Canyon, a site with Native American petroglyphs. All public testimony during the first day opposed the project.
The proposal would allow exploratory drilling at about 50 sites north of Edgemont. The company says it followed permitting requirements and the project would not harm the area.
The state Board of Minerals and Environment is expected to continue the hearing through the week.
