Newly filed campaign finance reports show U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson holding a significant fundraising lead in South Dakota’s Republican race for governor, with millions raised and spent ahead of the June primary.
According to pre-primary disclosures covering early 2026 through mid-May, Johnson reported raising about $3.7 million and spending roughly the same amount, far outpacing his opponents.
Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden reported raising about $2 million, largely from loans to his own campaign, highlighting a self-funded effort.
Gov. Larry Rhoden reported raising about $571,000 while spending more than $900,000 during the period, reflecting a gap between fundraising and expenditures.
State House Speaker Jon Hansen reported the lowest totals among the four candidates, raising about $355,000 and spending roughly $245,000.
Overall, the four Republican candidates combined to raise more than $6.6 million, with advertising representing the largest expense across campaigns.
The filings show that outside political groups have spent more than $1 million to influence the race through advertising and messaging.
