A man convicted in a deadly arson attack that killed a woman and injured his brother has been sentenced to life in federal prison without parole, authorities said.
Reno Rondeau was sentenced Monday after a jury in February found him guilty on four counts, including first-degree murder. He had previously pleaded not guilty.
In addition to the life sentence, Rondeau received 10-year prison terms for assault with intent to commit arson, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and arson.
Prosecutors said the attack was fueled by a long-running dispute over a family home in Manderson. Rondeau had threatened to burn the house and later set it on fire while it was occupied, then watched as it burned.
His brother, John Rondeau Sr., was injured while trying to rescue Tanya White Butterfly from the fire. White Butterfly, a former corrections officer for the Oglala Sioux Tribe, died of smoke inhalation.
The court also ordered Rondeau to pay about $5,000 in restitution to White Butterfly’s family.
